ABSTRACT

The extreme of thecategory would be imagery produced as part of an art therapy workshop, possibly only intended to be seen by the photographer/patient and therapist. Photography once enjoyed a reputation as the medium of record and evidence - ‘the camera never lies’. Scientific and medical photography certainly still aim to provide an accurate record and would usually be described as ‘creative’. Documentary photography, however, shares this heritage - the idea of ‘truth’ and of bearing witness to events. To document means to record. Putting aside modern philosophical debate about the notion of truth in photography, documentary photography covers a range of activities from the political activism of concerned photography to straight photojournalism based on news gathering. One of the growth areas in modern photography-thanks to the instant nature of digital technology - events photography is more recording the people attending an event than recording the event itself.
