ABSTRACT

A large proportion of the people employed in photography do not work as photographers. However, the focus of this chapter is on people working creatively within the industry, but not necessarily as photographers. The job usually goes much wider to include creating or promoting a particular style of photography for the publication, commissioning imagery from freelancers and working with the budgetary constraints of the publication. Picture researchers as opposed to picture editors tend to have wider art experience than pure photography as they will be involved in art and illustration, as well as photography. As such, galleries specialising in photography for both display and sales have increased and require graduates with knowledge of the history of photography and of some of the conservation issues surrounding the handling and ownership of historical photographic prints. Stock libraries always took a number of photography graduates who enjoyed cataloguing and key wording, as well as dealing with contributing specialist photographers.
