ABSTRACT

The graduation show or exhibition of the people final major work usually has a private viewing for selected guests. Agencies and art directors will probably do the rounds of the graduation shows looking for new directions and new talent. Leaving a pile of postcards at a public exhibition is passive marketing it is random chance who picks one up, if they are spotted at all. However, a postcard can be used to actively target a potential client by being posted to an individual art director, or handed over during a meeting. The success rate of passive marketing is very low indeed. It is far better to target the people efforts where they know there to be potential work. Stepping up from an assisting photographer to photographer is the most likely way to get work, but be aware that some photographers may see the people attempts to talk to and impress their clients as poaching.
