ABSTRACT

Creative teams often wish to sail close to legal boundaries and to those of good taste. To court controversy and notoriety is possibly better for the photographer and creative team than it is for the client. Boundaries will differ from client to client-some will want to explore the 'edgy' and have their visual imagery close to the borders of the acceptable; others will want to keep clear of any controversy. Photographers have to respect where these limits lie for each client. Sometimes the client and creative team together misjudge the public mood. An advertisement for Yves Saint Laurent Opium perfume, featuring the naked model Sophie Dahl, caused widespread controversy, becoming one of the most complained-about advertisements in 2000. It is a mark of the power of controversy that the photographic imagery was parodied a year later by Scottish Courage, the then brewers of Newcastle Brown Ale.
