ABSTRACT

Magazine and book production are done on expensive printing machinery that can only be operated cost effectively if the machines are constantly kept busy with jobs. There is almost no opportunity to delay printing to wait for editorial or advertising material, and printers' deadlines are absolute. As part of the production chain, the photographer must respect and adhere to any production deadline they are given. There are of course other minor deadlines within the overall project. This is not, however, an invitation to miss deadlines and avoid meetings. The old adage 'time is money' is absolutely true in creative photography. Time management is vital for each individual job and their ongoing professional career. That means each job needs to be planned with appropriate and sufficient time to prepare and create the final image. In the longer term, the photographer’s working pattern has to be planned so that unexpected jobs for existing clients can be accommodated.
