ABSTRACT

The processing stage of the digital workflow is a similar operation to film development - it is the technical realisation of the images from the shoot. Processing is the stage that takes the Raw file and produces a suitable file for editing and optimisation for a particular media be that print or display. Raw files are simply the files from the camera sensor unprocessed by the camera. The advantage of Raw files is that a dedicated computer can produce better results from processor intensive tasks, such as demosaicing, sharpening or noise reduction, than can the camera’s on-board computer. The latest generation of Raw file processors offers a wide range of modifications including spot removal, digital graduated filters and noise reduction. Some offer limited or selected editing to colour, and some feature cloning or healing. The settings that are chosen through the Raw processor are applied and what was a Raw file is now a TIFF.
