ABSTRACT

Developing a consistent approach to learning is a key responsibility of leaders at all levels. Essentially it means ensuring that everyone in the school is moving in the same direction. Consistency is key both to outcomes and progression. If a middle leader has developed an approach to, say, the teaching of fractions which has been proved to be successful, a teacher who chooses a different approach may have less impact in the classroom than other members of the team. It could be argued that performance management is there to make sure that this kind of thing doesn't happen, but it is easy for staff to 'play the game' and put the performance into performance management. Regular lesson monitoring is therefore essential if leaders are to have confidence in their teams. Of course, consistency cannot be achieved overnight. It takes a while for even the most competent and inspirational leaders to get everyone onboard.
