ABSTRACT

The subject curriculum plan builds upon the curriculum statement to offer an overview of the learning planned for each year group. The better ones also include reference to cross-curricular skills such as literacy and numeracy; some include aspects of the personal, social and health education (PSHE) agenda, especially if it is school policy for such topics to be mapped across the curriculum and not delivered by discrete subject teaching. The topic objectives state clearly what teachers intend their pupils to learn and experience, while the knowledge and skills section sets out the specific skills to be learnt. The basics are in the National Curriculum programmes of study, but successful schools work hard not only to develop a consistent approach to the curriculum within school but to develop a shared approach across their family of schools. The inclusion of ‘before and after’ links on the curriculum plan ensures that teachers pay more than lip service to prior and subsequent learning. .
