The two greatest threats to illicit love are gossip and scandal. Anyone connected with a girl is only too anxious to besmear her reputation. Her greatest enemies are ‘friends’ and relatives. Hence, the poet says, the extreme need for caution, and the hazards of trysts on moonlit nights.
