’Vicious friends’ As in other poems, ‘friends’ play a somewhat ambivalent role. The supposed ‘friend’ is often inquisitive, eaten up with curiosity and ready to betray the most private confidences. At the same time, she provides comfort, gives sympathy and understanding and often sustains morale.
