ABSTRACT

In the Unites States the incidence of reading disabilities, according to the National Advisory Committee on Dyslexia and Related Disorders is 10 to 15% of school children. Many investigators are intent on keeping to the narrow definition of dyslexia as outlined and doing research into the causes of the problem. The incidence of reading problems in primary schools is difficult to evaluate because it will depend on one’s criterion of what constitutes a reading problem. If intelligence is taken into account so that children were 2 years 4 months behind the level in reading expected for their age and intelligence, the incidence in the Isle of Wight study comes down to 3.7%. The reading problem of the child categorized as “dyslexic” is not due to lack of intelligence, lower socio-economic status, problems with the senses, physical disability or maladjustment.
