ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the need for business change to address the cultural silos that are discussed in Chapter 2. It looks at different frameworks for managing change and cites four examples of significant change in the sports industry: first, the development of the Premier League in English football; second, the creation of Major League Baseball Advanced Media as a separate business entity; third, it describes the formation of Twenty20 cricket, a shortened format of the game; and fourth, the introduction of NFL games in the United Kingdom. The chapter details two change frameworks: the Kübler-Ross model, which likens coping with change to acceptance of a terminal illness, and John Kotter’s 8-Step change model to bring about lasting change within organisations.

The case study for this chapter is provided by Mic Conetta, the Head of Digital at Arsenal Football Club.
