ABSTRACT

Recruiting operates in Britain at present under the general control of the Director of Army Recruiting. Alongside the Director of Recruiting one might put the Director of Public Relations, whose work is obviously closely linked. Within the orbit of these two Directors there are three distinct groups at work, even though their duties overlap. First, there is the straightforward recruiting organisation. Second, there are the elements which compose what might be called the ‘support’ group within the Ministry of Defence. And finally, among this supporting element comes the section of Public Relations specifically entrusted with making contact with the advertising agents who handle recruitment work. A major part of the effort put into attracting recruits into the Army is carried out under contract by certain advertising agencies, which form the third of these three groups. The agency which handles work in connection with recruiting of soldiers is Colman, Prentis, and Varley.
