ABSTRACT

The great merit of Australia, from the point of view of an ambitious young man, is that there are many difficulties which are not insuperable, so that life can be a sort of perpetual obstacle race. If a man has the kind of talents necessary to recommend himself to the authorities as a competent research student, he should be encouraged to visit institutes engaged in agricultural research in many parts of the world, especially those which have conditions not very unlike those of Australia or of whatever part of Australia specially interests him. Nearly half the population of Australia is in Sydney or Melbourne, and urban development is more top-heavy in our country than in any other. The men who make artistic or cultural innovations seldom conform at all closely to the pattern of behaviour which is considered proper for respectable citizens, and usually have something anarchic in their disposition.
