ABSTRACT

These three papers were broadcast across Australia by the ABC on successive Sunday evenings beginning 2 July 1950. They have been gathered together because they were prepared for the same weekly programme, Window on the World, and because of a contemplative tone that sets them apart from both Russell’s Guest of Honour talk (1) and his farewell radio address to Australia (15). An itinerary for the New South Wales leg of Russell’s tour (ra rec. acq. 291c) indicates that all three may have been recorded in a single session at an ABC studio in Sydney on the afternoon of 29 June 1950. He received payment for each broadcast at the same rate as for his contribution to Guest of Honour, i.e. 25 guineas sterling.
