ABSTRACT

Russell may have spoken from the typescript carbon copy-text of 32 as many as seven times during his last visit to the United States. Strangely, however, none of these presentations are known to have received Russell’s preferred billing—the title used here—which he wrote in ink on the first leaf both of this version and another carbon copy. The invitation to speak at Columbia followed Russell’s successful Matchette Foundation series there the previous year and set in motion his planning (with Julie Medlock) of yet another American lecture tour. Russell would also deliver his “happiness” talk to the Richmond Public Forum (29 October), Oberlin College, oh (3 November), the Woman’s College, Greensboro, nc (5 November), the Agricultural and Technical College (unconfirmed), also Greensboro, and Duke University (both 6 November), and the Charleston Open Forum (8 November).
