ABSTRACT

The idea for this short paper came from Russell’s American publishers, Simon and Schuster, who thought it would promote their edition of Unpopular Essays and give its prominent author’s back catalogue a boost. The numbered paragraphs were written in reply to a set of questions from Lincoln Schuster in a letter dated 9 May 1951. Schuster insisted to Russell that his opinions on these topics would be news-worthy and as easy to place as "a news story or interview". Accordingly, Schuster promised to circulate Russell's text to the New York Times and "other newspapers", as well as to "literary editors and editorial writers and opinion-makers in the field of foreign affairs". Notwithstanding Schuster's assumption that such titles would be eager to publish Russell and Durant on the future of Europe, no record of either text appearing in print has been located.
