ABSTRACT

In color theory, warm colors are considered to be reds, oranges, and yellows, and cool colors are considered to be greens, blues, and purples. In this kind of color classification, all skin tones would technically be considered to be warm. However, when identifying and classifying undertones within skin, the terms cool, warm, and neutral have different meanings. Color theory is mandatory training for professional makeup artists. Tinted moisturizers have very little pigment added, so they create a subtle wash of color. Liquid foundations can vary in pigmentation, but are typically much more sheer than cream foundations. Cream foundations spread on the skin opaquely, and can be thinned as needed. A banana yellow powder is popular because it warms up the overall skin tone and can appear less dull than a cool or white color. The yellow is also effective because it can help tone down redness, as well as neutralize purple discoloration.
