ABSTRACT
Asia was experiencing a period of commercial dynamism, distinguished by the intensity of trade and the flourishing of commercial ports. The Portuguese had adapted to the patterns of trade in Asia and had also absorbed useful experiences in order to participate in the life of port cities. The weight of China and Japan in South-East Asia was of great importance and the Portuguese moved towards these targets.
