ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on teaching strategies that are specifically designed to enhance divergent and creative thinking. It addresses how such strategies can be taught in schools, and how they can be integrated into content teaching. It begins by discussing approaches to teaching problem finding, and techniques to develop and support students’ questioning. The next section addresses techniques for enhancing divergent thinking, such as brainstorming, SCAMPER, and morphological synthesis. Following sections discuss strategies based on metaphor and analogy, including Synectics, and options for using visualization and creative dramatics in the classroom. The final section reviews student competitions designed to enhance creativity such as Future Problem Solving and Odyssey of the Mind.
