ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an overview of general principles for developing curriculum supportive of creativity across the content areas. These include considering the structure and focus of content, choosing teaching methodologies that engage students with content, grounding content in real-world purpose, and choosing appropriate assessments. The chapter then addresses strategies for planning content in language arts and social studies. In language arts, emphasis is on literary writing, and key areas include finding a focus for writing as communication, modeling the writing process of creative writers, and varying the genres of writing projects. In social studies, emphasis is on exploring multiple points of view across time and cultures, engaging with primary source materials as historical researchers, and preparing students for civic engagement, including place-based learning.
