ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 covers jihad through popular music. An important point is that this matter falls under a category of subculture or counterculture of angry people. An example of this is martyrdom culture. Jihadist videos are turned into music or pop videos to instigate Muslims to become martyrs or heroes dying for the faith. Three music videos, titled Hijrah, Blood for Blood, and My Revenge, are used as a case study to describe a genre reflecting modern music videos. Hezbollah’s martyrdom videos are also used as another case study. The notion of pop-jihad is something to behold. Pop-jihad is a musical genre that glorifies jihad by including intentionally controversial lyrics. This chapter ends with jihadist nasheeds. A nasheed is a spiritual hymn devoted to worship Allah. Nasheeds are an efficient communicative conduit of jihadism as they concentrate on a specific number of radical themes with broad appeal to the ummah.
