ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors introduce teacher inquiry as a way guide to the systematic study of our classroom to generate our own practice-based evidence. Teacher inquiry, the intentional and systematic study of our practice, is a means through which the teacher can grow our self-confidence, empathy, knowledge, and skills. Teachers must continually reflect on the decisions they make in order to improve their decision-making skills. Teacher inquiry also has a distinct emphasis on the professional collaboration. While it is likely that the teacher regularly think about our practice and talk to others about our work, the teacher inquiry differs in how these practices are done systematically and intentionally. Teacher inquiry can help us work toward more just and equitable systems of schooling by its potential to illuminate how injustice and inequity are experienced in our classrooms and the schools.
