ABSTRACT

Nick went to live in a stuccoed Victorian house in Primrose Hill, while we chose a 1920s semi-detached house in a suburban development (but more central, in Maida Vale) and proceeded to indulge in the stylistic/spatial opportunities it offered. As author explored urban design, conservation, variety and individuality more and more in all her projects, a gradual separation was emerging between the two sides of the office. The 1,000 dwellings report became a mini-manifesto in which she argued passionately that those proud, well-built housing estates consisted of handsome buildings that we, in the late 20th century, rarely equalled. She sought financial security, which was very important to her because of her background; a level playing field of not having money worries would mean that she could be in charge and in control.
