ABSTRACT

Information in digital formats is available for many kinds of analysis. Data mining is the term generally applied to analysis of quantitative information, but it can also be used to describe the analysis of texts, images, and recordings in digital formats. The advantages of data mining are mainly apparent at a large scale, when information exists in a quantity that would make it impossible (or impractical) for it to be interpreted in conventional reading or study. Specific tools exist for analysis of images, the large-scale study of audio and video recordings, and the needs of multi-modal communication research in which sound, image, tone, and other elements are all present. These methods extend traditional approaches and can be used as effective instruments in digital humanities work.
