ABSTRACT

The dining room today has been enjoying a renaissance. Dining tables are being designed for flexibility, for instance folding down to allow for intimate seating for four or expanding to seat more diners, and large tables are sometimes pushed against a wall for occasional buffet dining. These changes require a more flexible approach to lighting in the dining room, including rethinking the chandelier, adding an ambient layer with cove lighting or torchières, adding adjustable recessed downlights, paying attention to controls, and even using candles in new ways. Light layering in the dining room, as in the rest of the house, is the key to good lighting design. By blending different sources of light together, you will be able to create an overall feeling of comfort and drama.
