ABSTRACT

The challenge with open plan spaces, from the standpoint of lighting and interior design, is to create a sense of separation for the different areas. When designing lighting for an open plan space, it’s good to start with a plan of how to create the ambient light layer, using hidden linear lights, sconces, torchières, or other light sources that reflect light off the ceiling. Decorative luminaires here can also double as task light layer sources: floor lamps, pharmacy lamps, and table lamps can all provide light for reading, knitting, and other activities. They create little islands of illumination that draw people into various seating areas. The accent layer, used to highlight objects in the space, can come from recessed adjustable recessed downlights, track lighting, rail systems, or bridge systems. Balancing the different light layers unifies the open plan room while gently delineating its different functions.
