ABSTRACT

An understanding of the basic qualities of light will guide you when applying the theory of light layering and color theory to lighting design. Becoming a well-rounded designer means having a grasp of these concepts in both in theory and in practice. These basic qualities of light are intensity, distribution, direction, color (which includes both color temperature and color rendering), and movement. The lighting designer’s tools are organized in these categories. Good lighting designers care deeply about how light affects vision, perception, cognition, and emotions when creating the experience of a safe, healthy, beautiful enclosure – the building “envelope.”
