ABSTRACT

A vast variety of LED lamps (lightbulbs) and luminaires (fixtures) is available on the market. This chapter is a general guide to the basic categories of each that you will use in residential lighting. One of the first things to decide is whether you need a luminaire that has replaceable lamps or is what is referred to as an “integrated” luminaire, meaning that the LED light engine is a fully integrated part of the luminaire. Manufacturers appear to be covering both angles – they are continuing to make luminaires that will accept standard lamp forms, and at the same time innovating new forms of luminaires specifically for LED technology. When choosing lamps or luminaires, always look for the best quality of light first, then consider a range of other criteria, including color temperature, beam spread, mounting options, and compatibility, as well as trusted product brands.
