ABSTRACT

This chapter corrals the discussion that has taken place across the different aspects of digital disruption to sports journalism. The central argument of the book is that sports journalists can only maintain their authority and distinctiveness if they engage with serious and proper news work. To achieve this, sports journalists must maintain some of the new habits that formed during the pandemic, such as developing a wide range of sources and contacts and generating their own stories rather than relying on the routinised sources of information. However, this better future relies on the professional dedication and desire of practitioners themselves, the institutional attitudes of news organisations and the commitment to transparency from professional sports. Certainly, recent developments, such as The Athletic and the way sports journalists were forced to adapt to the pandemic, have provided renewed hope for the profession’s future health.
