ABSTRACT

Contemporary teachers must prepare students to be critical consumers and producers of media and can also capitalize on student interest in the use of media and social media. Chapter 8 orients the reader with current research about learners’ ability to navigate information online and how to prepare them to be better critical consumers and producers of media themselves. This chapter includes sample lessons for engaging learners in analyzing online information and creating their own media. Additionally, the chapter describes the many safe, easy, creative, and informative ways educators and learners can use social media like Twitter (now X), YouTube, and Instagram to support literacy skills. Finally, artificial intelligence (AI) and the potential benefits of an innovative literacy and arts-integrated classroom are introduced.
