ABSTRACT

Literacy-arts integrated experiences contribute to learners’ ability to connect artistic works and ideas with societal, cultural, and historical contexts and honor learners’ voice, identity, agency, and mindset, which helps deepen their understanding of themselves and others. The arts help learners understand the world and authentically express the thoughts that embody their lives. Learners’ own cultures are significant to the notions of creativity, and learners’ agency shapes their own lives and impacts the lives of others. Integrated opportunities to explore literacy and the arts equip learners with the language to talk about their learning and thinking and empower learners to discover, create, imagine, and produce multimodal artifacts and expressions that demonstrate synthesis and connections of knowledge, skills, and personal experiences resulting in more complex thinking, creating, and learning.
