ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 introduces the art of designing literacy-arts integrated lessons to spark innovation. It specifically builds upon the foundational knowledge presented in Chapters 1 and 2 by providing additional information for 1) understanding the value of literacy-arts integration from theory to practice, 2) advancing the theory and practice of arts integration, literacy, and innovation with the Bricolage Literacy and Arts Framework; and 3) recognizing the arts as a creative act common to many disciplines. This chapter explains instructional standards-based lesson design, including curriculum and the educational standards that inform literacy-arts integration in teaching and learning. The Bricolage Literacy and Arts Framework is introduced. The framework describes how literacy-arts integration in K-8 multicultural contexts includes designers of educational environments remixing existing theories, pedagogical approaches, reflective processes, positions on innovation and creativity, and social justice, supporting the educational and instructional value of literacy and the arts. The chapter concludes with a discussion about assessments related to literacy-arts integration and offers insights and essential elements to consider in supporting the art of designing literacy-arts integrated lessons that spark innovation. These insights draw upon the principles of the Reggio Emilia approach, literacy, arts-integration principles, and the Bricolage Literacy and Arts Framework.
