ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 highlights the significance of social emotional learning (SEL) for all learners. Designers of learning environments must recognize that social emotional learning holds equal significance to academic learning. When designing an innovative, inclusive, and inspiring learning space that promotes equity and culture-based creativity with a focus on literacy-arts integration, it is paramount that both the designers of learning environments and the learners they serve prioritize social emotional learning alongside the construction of literacy and arts content knowledge and learning. By incorporating social emotional learning into the design of literacy-arts integrated lessons and activities, we can create innovative, inclusive, and supportive environments that foster growth and well-being for all learners. This chapter introduces the CASEL Social Emotional Learning Framework, which outlines five key competencies: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness. SEL connects the theoretical perspectives in Chapter 1 to examine the reciprocal relationship between literacy, the arts, innovation, and social emotional learning in practice.
