ABSTRACT

Writing is an artistic process. Writing is also a design process. Chapter 7 pulls together the theoretical models and principles that integrate writing, art, and innovation to inform and guide decision-making when teaching writing in multicultural classrooms. The research about best practices for setting up and implementing an innovative writing classroom is outlined. It details the development of writing as play, writing and spelling as play, and utilizing models to illustrate how to integrate writing, the arts, and design thinking in an innovative classroom. This chapter links making art and making writing. Some of the activities discussed are project-based learning, 20time and passion projects, multigenre and multimodal writing, blogging, online zines, making poetry, and making books. Strategies for taking writing like poetry slams, class books, anthologies, and more are discussed.
