ABSTRACT

Just as verbal and nonverbal messages play a key part in our daily interactions, they are also vital to effective persuasive messages. In this chapter, we explore various elements of language including Kenneth Burke’s terministic screens, verbal communication strategies of names, classifications, definitions, descriptions, and comparisons, the use of language to intensify or downplay a situation or message, and compliance-gaining strategies. Then we move into nonverbal communication strategies and how vocalics, kinesics, proxemics, haptics, and chronemics aid in persuasive effectiveness.
