ABSTRACT

This chapter recounts the short-lived government of Prime Minister Trần Văn Hương (from November 4, 1964 to January 27, 1965). Having faced with the opposition from the Buddhists right from the beginning, the Trần Văn Hương government even had to deal with some difficulties created by the HNC. Incited by the Buddhist leaders, the students took to the streets, demanding changes of Prime Minister Hương’s cabinet. Prime Minister Hương resisted, ordered the police to re-establish order in the capital city of Saigon. The confrontation between the students and the government escalated to a political deadlock, which led to the Buddhist leaders’ decision to start their hunger’s strike. The political chaos was worsened when the Young Turks flexed their muscles in dissolving the HNC. Prime Minister Hương had to reshuffle his cabinet and invited four generals to join his government. In the meantime, General Khánh, no longer having US Government support after his confrontation with Ambassador Taylor, turned to the Buddhists in his plot to overthrow the Hương’s government. The Young Turks went along with him and removed Prime Minister Hương from power and asked Dr. Pham Huy Quát to form a new government.Formation of Trần Văn Hương government
