ABSTRACT

Metacognition is a broad term that refers to a person’s awareness of how they think and learn. In SDI Planning Step 4, we intentionally identify the metacognitive process needed to accomplish the learning target and the IEP goals. Because not everyone thinks the same way, this process can lead to several solid alternative methods for adapting instruction. In order to address the IEP goals, the special educator will need to generate different approaches to offer specially designed instruction. Teachers can improve their strategic metacognitive skills through reflection and practice. This chapter includes a reflection tool and guiding questions.
