ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how the Project Resources Programme can help people manage a project once an appointment has been secured and a contract agreed with the client. There are many software systems available to architects for the planning and monitoring of resources and fees on projects. They range from basic accounting packages to far more sophisticated systems that allow the creation of a detailed plan for monitoring project resources on a weekly basis. The project required a topographical survey, an environmental consultant, an arboriculturist, a structural engineer, a heritage expert, a highways engineer and a planning consultant. At every stage, the architect explained to the client why a specialist was needed, reported the costs and obtained authorisation. Time management can be difficult for architects because achieving the right quality sometimes demands more time than originally planned. The impact of fees on resources and how projects are managed has a big effect on profitability.
