ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how to monitor a project once it is up and running. Once a job is confirmed it is necessary for people to use the Project Resources Programme as a monitoring tool. This means that the Programme has to be simple, accessible and able to be revised. Cash is king when running a business. Working capital is critical to viability. Architects are normally paid in arrears, once the work has been completed. Fee invoices are often in instalments, but it can still take two or three months until payment is received from the client. A small practice expanded following a successful bid for three large commissions from a local authority client as part of a masterplan. For an office of any size, it is important to know how the practice’s bank balance stands in relation to the work expected to come in over the coming months.
