ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 discusses issues within the craft beer industry that have recently come to light, and that contravene the idea of it as a utopian, inclusive, and pro-social culture. It considers the presence of alcoholism, misogyny, heteronormativity, and racism in the craft beer industry. Craft beer has been caught up in a contradictory development, on the one hand it is about human liberation, creativity, and values that go beyond the instrument logic that so dominates our contemporary world. And on the other hand, it reinforces practices that cause some to be trapped within the forms of inequality and the racist and sexist practices that have been so much part of the white male world in the United States and elsewhere. We can think of alcoholism, racism, and sexism as the three main malaises of the craft brewing industry. And they are ones that the industry is starting to face.
