ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces two concepts in relation to the dependence upon God. The first of these is the image of God. The theologians, in making it, were attempting to clarify the meaning of the image of God in relation to the other major one, original sin. The image of God has been corrupted by original sin. The biblical story which links these two concepts is that of the “Fall” of Adam and Eve. In this account, God creates man and woman and places them in the garden to live obediently to Him. The image of God is not some abstract quality which we can think of as man’s possession before he was active in history. Sin is our denial of our true relationship to God and the attempt to organize life on some other basis. Christian theology interprets this experience in terms of the image of God and original sin.
