ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the use of sandplay therapy within a play therapy context. While both play therapy and sandplay therapy can serve as a window into a child’s internal world, sandplay adds structure to relatively unstructured play therapy, while play therapy provides a wide range of activities and ways to express oneself. There are sections on therapeutic play, sandplay in a play therapy setting, and the role of the therapist. These concepts are illustrated by the case of a seven-year-old boy who had few defenses against the highly charged issues in his home and in his inner and outer worlds. During his time in therapy, up to age 12, he moved from an anxious, frightened child to a more relaxed and confident pre-teen.
