ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with theoretical and conceptual material, followed by a sandplay case. It notes that a basic premise of sandplay therapy is that the psyche possesses a natural tendency to heal itself, given the proper conditions. Then, selected elements of Jungian theory about the Self and the ego are outlined. It explains how sandplay can be an effective means of evoking and nurturing the vital bridge between the Self and ego – discussing seven attributes of sandplay that are important in facilitating and enhancing healing. This is illustrated in a case of a seven-year- old boy who suffered from early separation caused by the divorce of his parents. His series of sand trays shows a positive reorganization of his psyche, even though his parents’ difficult relationship continued unchanged.
