ABSTRACT

Jung emphasized the importance of transition rites for primitive cultures. By contrast, our modern culture offers few rites of passage. Sandplay became the rite of passage for “M,” a woman in her early forties who suffered from extensive emotional and physical trauma in her childhood. Sandplay provided the sacred container for her spontaneous initiation process to emerge. Her work demonstrated the emergence and development of a creative, healing urge in the unconscious and dramatically illustrated her personal journey with unusual purity and clarity.
