ABSTRACT
Transference and countertransference can each be positive or negative in sandplay. This chapter summarizes historical views on transference and countertransference. Then, it explains why it is essential that sandplay therapists look for, and seriously take into account, indications of transference in the trays. It is important to give attention to the many ways sandplay pictures can speak to the therapeutic relationship. Twelve ways transference and countertransference can be seen in sandplay scenes are identified and illustrated with sand tray pictures.
