ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the role geopolitics play in the energy arena of South Asia. The geopolitical implications in the energy policies of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan are analyzed in detail by using international relations theory of neorealism and neoliberalism. The ineffectiveness of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) together with the failure to launch the TAPI and IPI pipelines in the region due to geopolitical issues are also discussed. Thereafter, the role of outside actors like China and the US in the energy sector of South Asia is analyzed to measure their impact in the energy security of the South Asian countries.
