This chapter provides context and an overview of the book and its argument as a whole. It will spend time explaining its contemporary relevance, especially in an era where “tragedy,” as label and means of understanding events, seems to be the norm rather than the exception. This will undoubtedly be the case even more so in a pandemic. What does this tell us about social reality today? How does tragedy, when discussed in relation to individuals, differ to its social application? Why are we attracted to the “tragic” as an explanation?
