ABSTRACT

The beauties of old domestic architecture, and the way of life which it was believed it embodied, became a trope in the romantically inspired rediscovery of ‘Old England’ in the 19th century, and its effects can even be seen in the conservationist efforts of bodies like the National Trust in our own time. Darley village continues to the village of Matlock, where is a bridge, and waterfalls of much beauty; thence the ride by the river, with the rocks, and the high-torr to the left, is sweetly romantic; and the river is as clear as crystal. The chapel, at one corner of the inner paved court, is very dirty and neglected; but the east window was highly to be admired for the very curious, and antique painting, till one of the brethren lately cut out 5 of the saints faces.
