ABSTRACT

Psychoeducation is a particular type of education that focuses on providing people with information that will improve their ability to manage their health and develop strategies to move beyond the constraints of illness. This chapter focuses on providing education related to the relationship between activity and participation patterns, and mental illness and recovery. The information covers a range of factors associated with the disturbances in activity and participation, categorized as biomedical, psychological, and social factors. In addition, attention is given to stress and its management in activity and participation, and substance use and its impact on activity and participation patterns. The chapter is organized into the following sections: information and knowledge about activity and participation and recovery in serious mental illness; the connection between activity and participation and well-being; the relationship between activity and participation and personal recovery; how mental illness impacts health through activity and participation; activities and participation, well-being, and substance use; and key competencies.
